What makes interactions difficult (opposing views, strong emotions, high stakes, a perceived threat to self-worth)
Identify approaches to conflict: 1. assert, 2. retreat and analyse or 3. accommodate
Manage yourself (self-regulation), the other person and the relationship
Maintain safety and an effective dialogue during a difficult conversation – empathy, active listening, asking thoughtful questions
Emotional reactions to difficult conversations, what triggers them
Learn to express your feelings and negotiate your needs (non-violent communication)
Role play (template provided by AIMS) – Analysis of own perspective (Master My Story) (What’s my role in the problem? What story am I telling about myself / the other person?) vs. the other person’s (identify unmet needs and underlying motivations of the other person, ask for their perspective, invite opposing views), look for win-win outcomes
Anticipate and prevent difficult conversations / conflicts
In a playful way (via Brainiup, The Brain Game), we will introduce and discuss the neuroscience of conflict - what happens in your brain, as well as what happens in the others' brain outside and during the ''confrontation''.
